Derry City secured a vital win in the League of Ireland Premier Division last night, with their 1-0 victory away at Waterford last night enough to move them top of the league.

Shelbourne have been the side setting the pace at the top of the division for most of the season, although Damien Duff's side have displayed some patchy form in recent weeks. Having once looked like strong favourites to claim the league title, their 1-1 draw with Bohemians last night means that they have failed to win in each of their last four league fixtures.

That has opened the door for Derry City, who moved top of the league on goal difference after last night's victory (albeit with Shelbourne having played a game less).

The win over Waterford was an important one, although they were given more than a helping hand from the opposition goalkeeper.

Ben Doherty scored the only game in Derry City's 1-0 win over Waterford, with his header on the hour mark proving to be the difference between the sides.

While Doherty's name will be the one of the scoresheet, you could argue that Waterford goalkeeper Louis Jones played the decisive role in the goal. He failed to deal with what was a very tame effort on his goal, fumbling a looping header across his own line.

Not great.

Even Doherty himself saw the funny side of the goal, with the Derry City man having this to say in response to the clip.

While it was hardly a moment of immense quality, that will matter very little to Derry City in their quest to win a first league title since 1997.

Shelbourne remain in the driving seat considering their game in hand, but when you look at their form in recent times, you would not have much confidence that they will capitalise on that position over the remainder of the campaign.
