It was a dramatic end to a less than dramatic game.
Germany and Italy showed they didn't spend as much time on the training ground with penalties as they do with every other aspect of their game. four penalties scored in the first ten - before Jonas Hector sealed Germany's place in the last four.
While most people will remember Matteo Darmian missing the crucial spot-kick - Thierry Henry went on an entertaining rant on just how bad the penalties were. He was most annoyed with Pelle, and Zaza - because well he has eyes.
"Why are you doing this?"@ThierryHenry wasn't a fan of some of the run-ups. https://t.co/7yx8M68v09

We'll always remember the miss by Darmian, but if I'm Italian I will think of the run up of Zaza and Pelle saying to the goalkeeper that he's going to dink it. Why are you doing this? They didn't even hit the target. They are the ones I'm going to remember.
Pressure makes you do stuff that you wouldn't normally do. I'm sure the guys the day before never missed one. We saw some of the worst penalties in the history of a shootout. There were so many that you can put in there.
We saw some atrocious efforts but we have to give credit to Neuer as he stopped two and he showed the whole game why he is the best goalkeeper in the world.
Alan Shearer was another on the BBC who was flabbergasted at what he saw:
If anyone is ever in doubt on how much pressure you're under then have a look at some of those penalties because some of those tonight were the worst I've ever seen. What on earth was with some of the run ups? It was incredible, dancing in front of the ball, Pelle telling the goalkeeper that he was going to maybe dink it instead of just concentrating on what you're going to do.
