What was he thinking?
Eamon Dunphy called it at half-time, Patrice Evra was the weak link all night for France.
While Manchester United fans will have missed his character since he left for Juventus, they will not have missed his defending as that aspect of the Frenchman's game has been on the slide for some time now, but he has rarely made a challenge as stupid as he did in the opening game of Euro 2016.
With France leading 1-0 and looking comfortable, Romania put a ball into the France box, and after the rebound fell to Stancu who was going absolutely nowhere when Evra, almost instinctively, stuck out a leg and tripped him.
The slow-mo shows perfectly just how ridiculous a challenge it was.
Mind boggling.
France were the consensus favourites going into the opener, but struggled greatly before eventually getting the over the line thanks to a moment of magic from Payet, but it was an unconvincing start from the hosts.
Then again, it's a tournament and three points on the board represents job done.
