The centre back on Celtic's 1981-82 Scottish League winning team - and this was back in the era when it was still possible for a team outside of Glasgow to win the championship so it was no fait accompli - was on Sky Sports tonight analysing his former club getting battered by their biggest rivals.
David Moyes looked chuffed with the speculation. Still, he remained responsibly circumspect before the television audience.
He refused to rule out taking the job. Aston Villa are also sniffing around.
Other names linked with the role include Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland's feted gaffer, Alan Stubbs, who has just led Hibs to the Scottish Cup Final and another bruised ex-manager of a major club, Brendan Rogers.
