In a prime example of Sky Sports holding the best for last, the final episode of their Fantasy Football Club was beguiled by the presence of Steve Staunton. The Irishman was in great form, telling a couple of great yarns, and was at his best recalling his time under Jack Charlton with Ireland.
There was a kind of endearing chaos to much of Charlton's reign. Jason McAteer recalls the squad training beside Dublin airport, where Charlton's team talks would meander for some time, as they were constantly interrupted by low-flying planes overhead. McAteer says that while this was obviously irritating, it helped foster a sense of unity.
Staunton recalled another such example on Sky Sports, revealing the absurd situation which gripped Ireland ahead of the World Cup clash with Italy at Giants Stadium. Ireland turned up wearing the wrong kit, and the panic that ensued took the pressure off ahead of the Italian game. Watch below:
Staunton recalls how virtually all of the crowd was stitched of green, which you can read more about here.
Elsewhere in the show, Staunton selected his teammates XI, which sadly did not feature Joe Lapira:
He evidently could not choose between Whelan and Keane. Quite a team.
