If there's one problem the Republic of Ireland have, it's scoring goals. Ever since the retirement of Robbie Keane, we have lacked a prolific goalscorer up front. We have plenty of talented players but they all seem to lack an eye for goal.
There are a number of promising prospects coming through the youth ranks, with the likes of Troy Parrott and Adam Idah set to have big futures ahead of them.
However, we need goals now. One player who could provide them is Sean Maguire.
The Preston man has yet to show his best form in an Ireland shirt, although in admittedly limited opportunities. If Mick McCarthy's side are to reach Euro 2020, you get the feeling he could make a big contribution.
That is why his first goal of the season was so encouraging. It wasn't the most eye-catching, but the movement and deftness shown by Maguire to steer the ball home was great to see.
With Callum Robinson having left for Sheffield United, the former Cork City man will be asked to carry more of the attacking burden at Preston this season. If they are to make a promotion push he will no doubt be a key part of it.
Hopefully he can carry on this goalscoring form, with Ireland set to face Switzerland in a vital Euro 2020 qualifier in Dublin next month.
