Despite many previous mutterings to the contrary, Martin O'Neill confirmed last week that Scott Hogan has decided to declare for Ireland.
Having been decidedly non-committal for more than a year, it appeared that Hogan was going to decide to play for England, with even O'Neill admitting it was probable that Hogan would play for England. That's not going to happen now, however, with Hogan claiming that he had not committed to Ireland as he was focused on recovering from a serious knee injury.
Judging by tonight, Hogan has recovered: he scored twice for Aston Villa in their 4-1 win against Wigan Athletic in the Coca Cola Worthington Carling Capital One EFL Carabo Cup.
Hogan opened the scoring from close range (with a hint of offside), and then put Villa 3-1 up a minute before the break. The second goal caught the eye: an exquisite turn and volley from the edge of the penalty area.
