Despite his Manchester United side scooping the first major trophy of the English football season, and becoming the first United boss to win a major honour in his first season, Jose Mourinho cut a despondent figure at full-time, as he was unable to raise a smile during the post-match celebrations.
After collecting his medal and reluctantly lifting the cup, Mourinho looked genuinely upset as the Sky Sports cameras cut to him for an interview, where he gave the reasoning behind his melancholic reaction.
Seemingly, the performance of Southampton, who he claims deserved more from the game, was enough to sour the occasion for Jose. We've seen managers refuse to get caught up in the excitement after a scrappy/lucky win before, but very, very rarely in a cup final after their side has won.
A strange reaction, footage has also emerged of his walk to collect his medal, where he can be seen shaking his head.
The image of the United players bouncing around in the background while Mourinho looks like he's just been sacked is a startling one. Sure, he can be upset with the performance of his players, and yes, he can feel bad for Southampton as they truly did play well and deserved better... But come on. You've won the cup, with a late winner at that, there's no way he's feeling as bad as he's letting on.
A weird interview, a weird reaction, the learning from this is that you can just never know what to expect from Mourinho when it comes to a post-match interview. Perhaps he's trying to ensure that his players remain focused with so much left to play for in the season, but they will no doubt be puzzled with what greets them in the dressing room if Jose really is that upset.
