Having to stay at home is bad enough, yet for the older members of society, having to cocoon means staying at home regardless of circumstance.
For some, that could mean an increasing sense of isolation, without much contact with the outside world. Manchester United have recognised that, and have enlisted the help of some club legends in trying to support some of their older fans.
Ex-players like Andy Cole and Bryan Robson have joined club staff in contacting around 3,000 United supporters and season ticket holders as part of an outreach programme in order to keep fans connected.
The club's chief operating officer Collette Roche has said that campaign was put in place as the club realised that this period can become increasingly difficult for some.
We all recognise how difficult a time this is for many of our fans, particularly elderly ones in isolation. A simple phone-call can brighten someone’s day so we’ve put in place a plan to call all our older season-ticket holders and others who we know may be vulnerable...
Having the legends involved has been a real bonus.
Robson and Cole were joined by the likes of David May, Wes Brown and Gary Pallister in sending messages of support.
Pallister noted the imperative nature of supporting those who have the supported the club for so long.
While we can’t wait until the football is back up and running, this has been a lovely experience to be part of. It allows us all to feel connected to United. The fans have looked after me as a player over the years, so it has been rewarding to offer them some support in return.
We all have a duty to reach out to those who might need help or simply some company at this time.

The club have also been reaching out all of their fans over the past number of weeks. They shared 'fan surprise' videos with Daniel James and a young supporter, as well as tweeting out motivational messages from Peter Schmeichel.
United have also supported the frontline workers of the NHS by changing the lights outside Old Trafford.
