Dejan Lovren Recalls Being Forced To Flee His Home As A Refugee At 3 Years Old

Liverpool have teased what promises to be a fascinating look back on the difficult upbringing of one of their players, Dejan Lovren, which is set to air on LFC TV later this week.

The former Southampton man is a Croatian international but was born in Bosnia, in the town of Kraljeva Sutjeska, and was only three years old when war broke out and he was forced to flee the country as a refugee.

After initially finding a home in Germany, where Lovren claims to have fallen in love with Bayern Munich, his family were told to leave and settled in Croatia. Amongst other things, Lovren revealed his memories of his family having to uproot and flee their home.

I wish I could explain everything what happened. You hear so many stories, but nobody knows the real truth. It just happened. It just changed everything through the night - war between everyone, between three different cultures. People just changed - we heard so many stories on the radio and the television.

I just remember when the sirens went on. I was so scared because I was thinking ‘bombs’ or that something will happen now. I remember my mum took me and we went to the basement, I don’t know how long we’d been sitting there, I think it was until the sirens went off. Afterwards, I remember mum, my uncle, my uncle’s wife, we took the car and then we were driving to Germany.

The trailer was pushed out today across Liverpool FC's social media channels, and it looks like it will make for a truly fascinating watch:

Fair play to Lovren for taking the decision to share his story, at a particularly sensitive time for the subject too, as it could help open a few minds to the struggle that those who are forced to flee their home are facing.

The documentary will air at 10pm on Wednesday night.
