Longford took a first half lead through David O'Sullivan. With eight minutes remaining in the first half, Patrick McClean - brother of Ireland winger James McClean - replaced the injured Aaron Barry at centre-back. That would later prove to be a key moment.

In the 73rd minute, with Longford still leading, the 19-year-old McClean rifled a stunning left-footed strike past Paul Skinner in the home side's goal.

It was his first goal for Derry City.
