George Hamilton is a national treasure. Of that there can be no doubt. And although schadenfreude at the expense of the English is no reason in itself to see that status enhanced, the manner in which the RTÉ commentator went about it is absolutely just cause for that status to be enhanced.
The entire continent was on their feet, cheering on the scenes in Nice last night and when that final whistle blew, George Hamilton's initial response was delightful. But the best was still to come.

'Four days that have shaken a kingdom'. That in itself could be iconic but it was what was to follow that surely had half the country rolling around the place in laughter. Hamilton's take on Bjørge Lillelien's iconic 1981 commentary in the aftermath of Norway's 2-1 over England was just about the perfect way to cap off a historic night of football.
