Just what has Chris Coleman got himself in for? Having earned the status of national hero in charge of the Welsh national team, Coleman has stepped away to guzzle from the most poisoned of chalices: Sunderland. Some point out that he leaves Wales having beaten by a former Sunderland manager in Martin O'Neill, but that perhaps says more of the sheer number of former Sunderland managers. Heck, the guy standing beside Martin O'Neill is a former Sunderland manager.
Coleman will take charge next week, but he did take in his new club's home game with Millwall yesterday, and was immediately confronted with the gargantuan task that lies in front of him. Jordan Pickford was probably the brightest part of Sunderland's miserable season last year, and they earned a tidy sum in selling him on to Everton. But that money has not been spent on an adequate replacement, as evidenced by the complete absence of quality in that draw with Millwall.
In fairness, the howlers were not limited to solely the Sunderland 'keeper Robbin Ruiter, with arguably the worst error of them all to be attributed to Millwall's Jordan Archer.
Here they are, elevated by the reactions of the Soccer Saturday panel.
Absolutely phenomenal goalkeeping in the Sunderland v Millwall game today! ? pic.twitter.com/uJ0arrB9Fq
