The eight minutes between Antoine Griezmann's equalising goal and Shane Duffy's sending off will go down as some of the most painful in the history of Irish football.
It was a first half full of verve and attacking intent from Ireland. Once Duffy saw red, it was a deflating moment for an Irish side which had already expelled a considerable amount of emotional energy.
Post-match, Irish fans, stuck in a small corner of the Stade de Lyon, remained on to salute the Irish players.
In the second half, John O'Shea came on to shore up the defence following Duffy's red. It will likely be his last action in an Ireland shirt.
For Robbie Keane and Shay Given - two legends of Irish football - it also probably be the end of their international careers.
Those three, in particular, were saluted by supporters after the game.
Irish players just standing and looking at the fans serenading them. Quite a scene. They don't want to leave. pic.twitter.com/w2go6NAL0s
