Without their star player Mohamed Salah, Egypt fell to an opening day defeat in yesterday's second Group A game to Uruguay.
Creating only the most occasional of chances without the free-scoring Liverpool man in their starting XI, the presence of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani guaranteed that their opponents Uruguay would have no such issue.
However, with the game drawing to a close and yet a goal to be scored, the stalemate had much to do with the profligacy of Uruguay's forwards, and the goalkeeping of Egypt's Mohamed El-Shenawy.
Named man-of-the-match for his performance in Egypt's 1-0 defeat, there was nothing he could do about Jose Gimenez's 90th minute headed winner.
Making impressive saves throughout, El-Shenawy received particular plaudits for this stop from a Cavani volley late on.
However, an arguably greater save came immediately after; and very few seemed to pick up on it whatsoever. A Cavani free-kick just outside the Egypt box, it had appeared that the PSG man's effort cleanly hit the post and stayed out.
Yet, from the reverse angle, there is no denying that El-Shenawy got a powerful hand to the stellar effort.
