It says a lot about the physicality of modern football when you're not actually sure whether or not someone has punched another player on the pitch, as we can remember a time when a punch looked like this from Johnny Giles:
But times have changed, and an incident that took place right that the start of the second half that has divided opinion across social media.
Was this a punch from Edinson Cavani, and should he have been sent off?
It certainly does look like he made contact with Ramsey's jaw, but wow, there really was nothing in it.
Granted, we've seen players sent off for less, but let's break this down and look closer.
Stage 1: Handbags.
Footballers love a shove when a foul has been given, we've seen it a million times before.
Stage 2: The strike.
You can tell Cavani really set out to hurt the Welshman by the complete lack of a wind up. How all punches with malice are thrown.
Stage 3: "I can't believe you've done this."
The outrage does not reflect well on Ramsey. Yes he hit out, but there are shades of "Charlie bit my finger!" about this one.
Stage 4: "I can't believe he's done this."
Drawing attention to the fact he has been hit, we can't really blame Ramsey here, as again, we've seen players sent off for less.
Stage 5: Cop on.
We know how Cavani feels about the situation, but he should also do this gesture to himself because both men need to cop on.
Neither men come out looking great, football is the real loser here.
Was it a punch? No.
Did he strike Ramsey in the chin? Yes.
Should he have been punished for that? Yes.
Was this breakdown a complete waste of time but also necessary as a microcosm of how ridiculous the spotlighting of these incidents have become?... Also yes.
But just in case you were thinking that Cavani was in the right here, he then went and flopped over for an embarrasing dive...
What a tit.
