We may have all rejoiced when Ireland avoided Italy and Croatia, and out of the hat came Denmark for the World Cup Playoffs. Quickly though, the fearful and inferior part of the Irish psyche looked for a reason this might not work out so well. One name was quick to bring us down to earth: Christian Eriksen.
The Spurs midfielder scored an incredible 8 goals from midfield for Denmark in the Qualifiers. For his club, the 25 year old Eriksen has been in the kind of form that makes his £11 million transfer fee back in 2013 look like an absolute steal.
Tonight, at Wembley, Tottenham dismantled a Real Madrid team that don't look like the two time European Champions. As the Spurs fans cheered every pass by the home team in just the 72nd minute, it became clear it was going to be one of those humiliating, infamous nights for the giants of European football.
The Spurs performance was outstanding. Dele Alli, in particular, scoring the first two goals, and the brilliant Harry Kane have stood out, but in midfield Irish eyes will have been firmly fixed on the performance of Eriksen.
His finish for the 3rd Spurs epitomised the danger he will pose to Ireland in just over a week's time.
Eriksen's performance over the 90 minutes was equally disturbing from an Irish perspective.
Eriksen has all the skills needed to play in that LW/LAM Iniesta position for Barcelona. he's supreme. https://t.co/0YPwRkFd6v
