Having been reduced to 10 men shortly after ten minutes of play, it was never likely that Atletico Madrid would dominate proceeding in the Emirates tonight.
Absorbing an immense amount of Arsenal pressure, Alexander Lacazette finally broke Atletico's resistance to give Arsene Wenger's side a 1-0 lead.
Looking good to double that lead, Arsenal would have felt - tentatively, perhaps - that this would give them a decent platform to build upon in Madrid.
Alas, it wasn't meant to be.
Having had relatively little trouble from Atletico's diminished attacking threat all night, a defensive mishap, and the dogged determination of Antoine Griezmann gave the Spanish side a draw that will surely feel like a victory.
It is certainly not an incident Griezmann's international colleague Laurent Koscielny will look back on fondly.
Atletico's Diego Simeone had been sent to the stands for an earlier protest, but he looked pretty happy with the surprising breakthrough.
