It took until the final five minutes, but finally, Jon Walters loosed chaos on the Austrian defence. He equalised to earn a point that was improbable - bordering on the miraculous given the Irish performance to that stage - but it could have been all three, as Austria collectively lost their heads as the Aviva exploded into noise.
Two minutes after the equaliser, Ireland had the ball in the back of the net once again: but the referee disallowed it, citing a fooul by Shane Duffy.
