Liverpool have been eliminated from the Europa League as Besiktas won 1-0 on the night, sending the game to extra-time and then penalties, where the Turkish side won 5-4.
Dejan Lovren took the 10th penalty, and as all nine takers before him dispatched of theirs, the Croatian defender needed to score to keep Liverpool alive. Having seen several penalties find the top corner already, Lovren too decided to place his shot high, but unfortunately for him and his team he couldn't hit the target.
This may be seen as a blessing in disguise for some Liverpool fans, as now the club can fully focus on finishing in the top four of the Premier League, although 120 minutes of Thursday night football in Turkey will certainly not be ideal preparations ahead of Sunday's showdown with Man City.
