Barnet were denied a goal against Cambridge United despite the presence of a massive smokebomb created from a flare let off behind the goal.
A convoluted, and rather difficult to describe, goal from Barnet's George Sykes was chalked off. The linesman adjudged that a skied clearance off the line from Cambridge United defender was deemed to spun beyond the goalpost in the air. When the ball dropped down, Sykes scuffed it into the net but the linesman, despite the presence of a thick fug of smoke in his line of sight, made his call.
Even Barnet boss Edgar Davids, with his zooty spectacles, hadn't the foggiest idea how the linesman managed to see the whether the ball was out. Certainly, the linesman could have given the attacking team the benefit of the doubt but the smokebomb clouds the issue.
