Ann Coulter was back on the television, nestled in her second home on Fox News, (she appears on the station with roughly the same frequency as Constantin Gurdgiev appears on Tonight with Vincent Browne) , talking about soccer/football.
It’s a brief little snippet but she crowbarred in a disparaging word about ‘ties’ and the little bit of ‘rioting’ she witnessed after the Russia-Algeria game (Coulter was in the incongruous surrounds of Paris, sitting in front of the Champs Elysees).
The video is short but this intriguing article in The Atlantic magazine by Peter Beinart argues that Coulter is in fact right to worry about soccer. He suggests that America’s new found interest in the game heralds the end of ‘American exceptionalism’ in whole swathe of areas and points out that the soccer constituency was the one that propelled Obama to power. Well worth a read.
