Bayer Leverkusen defender Emir Spahic could be set for a long spell on the sidelines and maybe worse following a home defeat to Bayern on Wednesday. German police have become involved in an investigation into whether he assaulted a steward in the aftermath of his sides 5-3 loss on penalties in the DFB Pokal.

The Bosnian centre back became embroiled in an incident after the final whistle when a friend of his was supposedly prevented from moving to another part of the ground by the Leverkusen stewards.

Spahic spotted this and a scuffle ensued which, as you can see, escalated quickly.

(The alleged headbutt is around the 1.30 mark)

A statement from Bayer confirmed that Spahic will apologise for the incident before confirming that more action may be taken.

It is clear that there has been a physical dispute after the final whistle. We will review the incident and try to clarify now who was there and why they were there.
