A ‘Javier Zanetti XI’ took on a ‘World XI’ in Rome last night a ‘Match for Peace’ organised after a meeting between Zanetti and Pope Francis.
You can debate the point of such fixtures long into the night (I know I will), but as often happens in these exhibition games, there was one wonderful sequence of play that made the whole venture worthwhile – a Roberto Baggio goal made by the the outside of Diego Maradona’s left boot.
Who cares if he was offside – I’m not saying he definitely was – and who cares if the defenders pretty much stood and watched as Baggio cooly rounded the surprisingly greying Francesco Toldo? Can you blame them? That pass, that composure. It’s like a vision from childhood only better, and fatter. I might have a bit of a cry.
