Following the incredible scenes at Stoke train station on Saturday, it's no surprise that Messrs Carragher and Neville took some time during Monday Night Football to dissect the problems that Arsenal are going through at the moment. While the majority of the blame has been placed at the feet of Arsene Wenger, Jamie Carragher instead chose to shine a particularly strong light on the performance of Arsenal's only genuinely experienced centre back.
As usual it was an excellent insight but one which is sure to be uncomfortable viewing for Arsenal fans.
Carragher's overarching analysis was that Mertesacker has completely foregone his role as the commanding presence at the heart of the back five something which was blatantly shown up against Stoke. Worse still, Carragher accused the German of shirking out of challenges and the physical aspect of Stoke's play.
You're away at Stoke, put that ball in the space and even if you go right through Bojan let them know you're in a game.
Unsurprisingly, the discussion moved on to the abuse that Arsene Wenger has been receiving in recent weeks.
If I could think of one word to sum up Arsenal Football Club it would be 'class'. That was classless, the banner at West Brom, the reaction at the train station.
The day he leaves that football club, they'll be building a statue of him, the job he's done for them.
