Irish attentions were not solely focussed on the Aviva this evening.
Group rivals Scotland were also in action at Hampden Park against Germany.
Twice the Germans took the lead and twice the Scots pegged back their lead, however they could not do it on the third occasion as Ilkay Gundogan's goal proved decisive.
Thomas Muller gave the world champions the lead after 18 minutes.

Their advantage lasted just 10 minutes. Mats Hummels inadvertently put the ball past his own keeper.

In the 34th minute, Germany retook the lead with Thomas Muller again the scorer.
