Even the most ardent Kopite wouldn't argue with the prevailing opinion surrounding Liverpool's rather leaky defence over the past couple of years. There's no denying that they've let in far too many goals and quite a few defenders have taken (deserving) flack for that. Daniel Agger has been shipped out, while Glen Johnson is the victim of ire from quite a few fans whenever he steps foot on the pitch.
However, the fact that Liverpool's defensive struggles have coincided with Simon Mignolet's arrival from Sunderland has, for the most part, been overlooked. Enter Gary Neville to make sure that's no longer the case.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville laid the blame for some of Liverpool's defensive struggles firmly at the door of the Belgian, and it's quite difficult to disagree with him.
The fact that Jamie Carragher passed up the opportunity to defend the Liverpool goalkeeper says quite a lot. With the spectre of Victor Valdes' possible arrival lurking, Neville may not be the only person shining a spotlight on Mignolet's performances over the next while.
