Soccer Republic on RTÉ last night started off with a debate on the merits of last week's Shamrock Rovers vs Liverpool game at the Aviva. The debate began with some explosive comments from former Shelbourne manager Dermot Keely who called Liverpool fans who went to the game "42,000 morons going to watch Liverpool's reserve team".
Richie Sadlier defended those who support Premier League teams saying that because it is the ambition of all Irish players to go and play in England and that due to all of the senior Irish squad playing outside of Ireland it was absurd to criticise fans for supporting English teams.
Keely also had a dig at Brad Jones, who played under him at Shelbourne, citing him as a particular example of the lack of quality in the Liverpool team on the day.
Brad Jones, I let him go 10 years ago, 2 matches he played...he let in 4 goals.
Keely also pointed out what he believes is the mindset of some Irish football fans these days:
You can't stall it and go for a cup of tea. That's what they're into now.
Watch the whole thing above.
