It turns out Roy Keane's tetchy relationship goes back way further than any of us would have thought. Last night, Keane told a story in UCC of how he was fined by the FAI for signing for two clubs at the same time when he was 18.
Back in 1989, Keane had signed for Cork City but decided to go to Cobh Ramblers after they guaranteed him he'd be awarded a coveted place on a FÁS course if he played for them.
Cork City weren't able to offer him such an assurance so the bould Keano went and joined Cobh. The FAI fined him £100 after he signed for both clubs but Cobh Ramblers paid the penalty for him.
Ironically, something similar would later happened to Keane when he changed his mind at the last minute and joined Man United instead of Blackburn Rovers. Although nothing had been signed in this instance, and I don't thing the decision was driven by the possibility of a FÁS course.
