Spain versus Australia was not wholly meaningless. David Villa, one of the great forwards of the modern era, put Spain ahead in the 35th minute and was then substituted in the 56th minute, making way for Juan Mata.

On the cusp of making his way to New York, and the MLS (via Australia), it would appear that this was Villa's final appearance in his country's colours and the former Valencia, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid man's emotions got the better of him.

His peak is now behind him but what a star he has been. He leaves the international stage with 97 caps, 59 goals and as Spain's all-time World Cup top scorer.
Spain may be returning home under a cloud yet Villa's legacy will remain intact.
