Manchester City's visit to Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium for the opening leg of their Champions League clash began in dramatic circumstances with an early penalty thanks to VAR.
The video assistant referee has been a much-maligned aspect of the Champions League so far this campaign and it produced more controversy early in the tie after Danny Rose appeared to handle a goalbound shot.
The English defender was going to ground at the time and had his hand above his body. Referee Bjorn Kuipers awarded a penalty after consulting footage.

However, it did not matter as Hugo Lloris saved the Sergio Aguero penalty.

The decision itself once again produced much disagreement, with former Republic of Ireland striker Niall Quinn labelling it "debatable." Rose was also booked for the incident.
