"Jarzinho faced by Fachetti...oh, that's not a bad ball for Pele, on the right side it's Carlos Alberto...OH WHAT A GREAT GOAL THA- oh, VAR".
While VAR hasn't interrupted some of the iconic moments of World Cups gone past, it will do so this summer. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) have today approved the use of VAR at this summer's World Cup in Russia.
Fifa boss Gianni Infantino has already given his backing to the use of video, which has been rolled out for use in the Bundesliga and Serie A this season.
Now Fifa just need to go through the formality of including VAR in their competition rulebook at a meeting in Colombia later this month.
VAR will be used to correct any "clear and obvious errors" in relation to:
-Goal/No Goal
- Penalty/No penalty
- Direct red card (not a second yellow)
- Mistaken identity
Infantino said that he was initially sceptical of VAR, but has been won over by it. (We're not sure how). IFAB have crowned the decision as a historic step toward greater fairness in football.
Here's hoping the clear problems we've seen thus far this season across Europe will be corrected in time for the tournament. We only get a World Cup every four years, so best hope that this one isn't ruined...
