Manchester United are out of the Champions League. A devastating and almost exciting defeat in Germany to Wolfsburg wasn't enough for the Red Devils to reach the knockout stage. Louis Van Gaal's team will now play in the Europa League.
Man United fans were understandably disconsolate, with some confused with what they were seeing, some wanting Van Gaal to leave, and others pining for the days of David Moyes. Here's the rollercoaster of reactions from the Utd fans.
First there was an overpouring of emotions:
I hate football #MUFC

This is nonsense #mufc

This has been an absolutely disgraceful evening of football. We deserved nothing. Appalling. Shambolic.

#mufc fans can deal with the heartbreak it's the hope that kills. That is just cruel.
— Darren Cleary (@RadioCleary) December 8, 2015
It's so bad it's almost laughable #MUFC

GOAL: United 2-3 Wolfsburg. Sending Van Gaal my Medical Bill for tonight. #MUFC

It's totally believable. The only perhaps not believable thing about this game is that it's not 0-0. #MUFC https://t.co/ZbHYzLpk5P

And then there was anger:
When van Gaal eventually gets fired, that Mata/Powell substitution is going to be engraved on his managerial headstone.

Will Van Gaal be able to resist snarkily saying "well, you all wanted more excitement"
— aidan o'hara (@oharaa) December 8, 2015
Dare I suggest that's what happens when you leave yourself with a bunch of kids defending a vital lead? #MUFC
— Richard Innes (@bigrichinnes) December 8, 2015
Serious lack of depth in the squad, no plan B, negative attitude. Altogether makes a shoddy mix. #MUFC
— Dean Parker (@deanmillaparker) December 8, 2015
Scandalous that #MUFC have failed to get out of this CL group and even more incredible how relaxed the board were about it
— Josh Wright (@_WrightJosh) December 8, 2015
MOYES IN:
Can't wait to hear what LvG has to say. Not good enough. Moyes signed our best player tonight. #Varela #MUFC
— Michael Cloke (@cloke23) December 8, 2015
Two goals in 8 minutes? Maybe in Fergie's day but it's impossible now #mufc
— Jamie ⚪️ (@Jamiep7) December 8, 2015
One fan found a silver lining:
At least I don't have to pay £20 a month for BT Sport anymore. #MUFC
