'Urban Exploration' is a trend that is proving to be very popular one YouTube as teenagers dressed head to toe in almost identical Nike/Adidas tracksuits scale buildings both active and abandoned to show off the views from above whatever city they are in, but such is the nature of YouTube, every video has to top the last.
During the Premier League season just gone, stadium staff from around the UK would have been alerted to what happened at West Ham's London Stadium, when a group of these urban explorers were able to effortlessly break in, run onto the pitch, and climb onto the roof. Then it happened at The Emirates, and then it happened at Old Trafford as two young lads were able to hide in the toilets and stay over night to watch the Arsenal match the next day without a ticket.
It should be pointed out that these guys are breaking in with no intent other than to document themselves being 'extreme' and get some incredible photos, but that doesn't mean it isn't utterly stupid in the current climate.
The latest example is possibly the most stupid, as one YouTube thought Manchester would be a good place to break into a massive landmark just over a week after the terror attack at the Manchester Arena.
Incredibly, Rikkie Brewer, who uploaded the footage of his Old Trafford break-in to YouTube, even said the following before his attempt:
So we're here in the heart of Manchester and I've just paid my respects to Manchester obviously with what happened recently, which is a sad thought to be honest, but hopefully we can make Manchester positive.
By breaking into a stadium and alerting police to another security breach at Old Trafford. Stunning.
After first climbing a hotel that overlooks the city (again, what better way to spread positivity than by breaching the security of a hotel), they scaled Old Trafford and took photos and videos from the roof. And they documented it all on YouTube.
The one positive is that security can see how they are gaining access and put a stop to it, and again it should be re-iterated that these guys are young men with no malicious intentions, but it just seems like such a daft thing to do with what has happened in the UK lately.
A BBC report stated that no arrests were made despite the lads being chased by security.
The "urban climbers" were chased by the ground's security staff after they broke into Old Trafford in the early hours of Sunday 4 June, the club said.
It happened hours before Michael Carrick's testimonial game and less than two weeks after a terror attack killed 22 people at Manchester Arena.
The club condemned their actions as "stupid and irresponsible".
The group managed to avoid capture and police said no arrests were made.
It's reckless, but after the first stadium break-in from an urban explorer eclipsed 500,000 views in a single weekend, there was always going to be more willing to have a go.
