Ronald Koeman more or less confirmed last week that Aiden McGeady wouldn't be rocking up to the Everton training ground in his Mustang for too much longer.
For the tidbit that McGeady drives a classic Ford Mustang to work everyday, we are indebted to Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo, who wrote of how McGeady hadn't seen a scrap of action during the off-season, has been denied a squad number and has now effectively been "frozen out" altogether.
There's always a volley of indignation when it emerges that Premier League bench sitters drive around in some flashy gear, but Kirkbride's article is not all moralistic fury. He described McGeady as "quiet, sincere, and down to earth" but he was far too inconsistent for Koeman's (and his predecessor's) tastes.
In addition to the unsurprising news that McGeady is being shipped out, reports now tell us James McCarthy will be following him to the exit door.
McCarthy was whipped off before half-time during Saturday's win at West Brom. Taking off a healthy player before half-time is always a very aggressive statement from a manager. Liam Brady was so humiliated by Jack Charlton doing so before half-time in a Germany friendly in 1989 that he retired from international football more or less immediately.
The Mail report that Rafa Benitez may come in for James McCarthy. Other clubs floating around are Celtic, Aston Villa and Watford. It's also hinted that David Moyes wouldn't be averse to bringing him to Sunderland.
