TV3's Trevor Welch Opens Up About Custard Cream-gate

It's been a big week for TV3 sports reported Trevor Welch after he became an online sensation when he gave Jose Mourinho a packet of custard creams after Chelsea beat PSG on Tuesday.

The reaction of most people seemed to be 'What the hell was that about!?' as unfortunately for Trevor, the backstory to all of it happened long before the days of Balls or most other Irish sports sites, in a time when such farflung places as Cavan and Kerry didn't even have broadband yet.*

In 2010, Welch interviewed Mourinho after his Inter Milan side beat Chelsea. He tells the Irish Examiner what happened, in his own words:

I saw him taking custard creams out of his pocket as he came down the corridor,” Welch recalled of that exchange. “The interview was last minute, just before he got on the bus, and even though he had one in his mouth we had to go live straight away. He apologised. But I asked him if he liked custard creams and he said they were his favourites.

Fast forward four years to last Tuesday night and Welch decided to give Mourinho an unexpected present:

I was taking a gamble.

I stopped on the way to the airport in Cork on Tuesday morning to buy the custard creams, thinking that if it all went to plan and Chelsea got through, I’d have to take the opportunity to present him with them as a follow-up to the interview four years ago. And it worked a treat.

Welch goes on to describe how those behind the scenes reacted:

The Uefa people were laughing and Mourinho’s PA guy, who goes everywhere with him, he’s normally stern and stony-faced, but he actually smiled. I know some people didn’t get the fact there was previous to it. But most people were positive.

He also told the Examiner that a member of Chelsea's staff did indeed confirm that Mourinho has a heap of Custard Creams stored in a cupboard at Stamford Bridge at all times.

*Probably not true.
