The last two English managers to win the English top flight (not Premier League, never Premier League) are two Howards, Wilkinson and Kendall.
The latter died this morning aged 69.
Having won a League title with Everton as a player back in 1970, Kendall managed them to their next two championship wins in 1985 and 1987.
On the 1970 team, he was one third of the dynamic midfield trio including Alan Ball and Colin Harvey. They were dubbed the Holy Trinity. Along with the goals of centre forward Joe Royle (another future Everton manager), they were instrumental in guiding Everton to the title.
His Everton side of the 1980s also won the FA Cup in 1984 and the Cup Winners Cup in 1985. Unfortunately, they never got a shot at the European Cup.
As a mark of respect, there will be a tribute to Howard Kendall before kick-off and both teams will wear black armbands.
