At a time when there are no shortage of exciting young Irish players coming through, few have the potential to get you out of your seat like Trent Kone-Doherty.

The 16-year old came through the ranks at hometown club Derry City, although his talents quickly drew the attentions of some of Europe's top clubs. The winger would ultimately opt to sign for Liverpool, agreeing a deal earlier this year and then eventually making his way to Merseyside during the summer.

It is reported that they paid a fee of around £150,000 for his services, with future add-ons also likely included.

Trent Kone-Doherty continues sparkling Liverpool form

While it can be difficult to predict how a young player will cope with such a big move, Trent Kone-Doherty has had no issues adapting to life at his new club.

He has taken to English football like a fish to water, already racking up some eye-catching individual numbers.

Prior to this afternoon's UEFA Youth League game against Ajax, the youngster had scored six goals in his last seven appearances in red. He would find himself on the losing side in that one, although he would score a header to keep his impressive scoring run going.

It was his first goal for the club in European competition. While this wasn't the most difficult of finishes, it did point to Kone-Doherty's instincts in and around the penalty area.

These goals against Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers certainly give us a strong hint as to his ability on the ball.

At 16-years old, the player is likely to still be some way off first team considerations at Anfield.

In saying that, we could see him move up the age levels for Ireland in the near future. The Derry native has already played for his country up to U17 level, putting in some excellent performances along the way.

Ireland have shown a willingness to fast track players into the higher age categories, with Trent Kone-Doherty looking like a prime candidate for such a move.

He is certainly one to keep an eye on.
