Manchester United are on the verge of signing Atletico Madrid's French striker Antoine Griezmann, reports indicate, with the 25-year-old expected to move to Old Trafford in the summer window for a fee that would make him the world's second most expensive footballer.
According to a report on French TV station Canal Plus (per The Guardian), personal terms have been agreed between Griezmann and the Red Devils. Griezmann is said to make as much as Paul Pogba (£17.7 million a year) if he moves to Old Trafford, and his signature would cost the club £85.5 million (just short of the £92.5 million Pogba cost) according to the release clause in Griezmann's contract.
The signing of Griezmann would be a serious signal of intent from United ahead of next season. Being so young, Jose Mourinho will hope that the club is capturing a player with his prime still ahead of him. Griezmann was brilliant in the Euros for France, scoring six goals in as many games and finishing as the tournament's top scorer, continuing the form he showed for Atletico the previous season when he scored 22 goals in 36 La Liga games and 7 goals in 13 Champions League matches. This season he has notched 8 goals in 19 La Liga games and 3 in 6 in Europe.
And, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic not getting any younger (though the 35-year-old has scored 19 goals in all competitions for United so far this season), Griezmann would be a fine option up front for United going forward.
