Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has suggested the Premier League should stage an all-star game, with teams from the northern half of England playing the Southern half.

Boehly, who is also a co-owner of Major Baseball League side the Los Angeles Dodgers, took over from Roman Abramovich as owner of Chelsea in May.

Speaking in New York at the SALT Conference, Boehly claimed the Premier League should host an all-star game that is often seen in America.

“Ultimately I hope that the Premier League takes a little bit of a lesson from American sports and really starts to figure out why we wouldn’t do a tournament with the bottom four teams, why isn’t there an all-star game?

People are talking about more money for the pyramid-Major League Baseball did their All-Star game in L.A this year, we made $200 million from a Monday and a Tuesday. You could do a North versus South All-star game for the Premier League to fund whatever the pyramid needed very easily.”

At the event, Boehly also spoke on his intentions to expand Chelsea as a global business, touching on the progress of Red Bull sides Salzburg and Leipzig.

He also mentioned Chelsea’s infamous loan system, which has seen Chelsea loan promising young players who have been unable to break into the first team loaned to clubs to progress their career.

“There’s different countries where there is advantages to having a club. Red Bull does a really good job, they’ve got Leipzig and they’ve got Salzburg, both of which are playing in Champions League.

The challenge that Chelsea has right now, is you have 18,19,20-year-old superstars. You can loan them out to other clubs, but you are putting their development in someone else’s hands.”

Despite only being at the hierarchy for a matter of months, Boehly already faces a challenging time as Co-owner of Chelsea. The decision to sack Champions League winning manager Thomas Tuchel was seen as controversial by many, with Brighton’s Graham Potter taking over.

At the event, he explained his decision making behind the dismissal of the German coach:

“Tuchel is obviously extremely talented, and someone who had great success at Chelsea. Our vision at the club was finding someone who really wanted to collaborate with us.

There’s a lot of walls to break down at Chelsea. For the first team and academy for example, didn’t really share data, didn’t really share information about where the top players were coming from.

The reality of our decision was we just weren’t sure if Thomas saw it the same way we saw it. No one’s right or wrong, we just didn’t have a shared vision for the future.”
