French football magazine Le Cahiers Du Sport posted a satirical story to their website yesterday about a 24 team Qatari royal family backed summer league featuring the best teams in the world. The league would be held every two years and would be called the 'Dream Football League'. It would be held in six locations including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
This morning, The Times ran with a very similar sounding story about a project also called the 'Dream Football League' which which would commence in 2015, as also stated in the Le Cahiers Du Sport piece.
On Twitter earlier this morning, Oliver Kay, who wrote the piece in The Times told the Le Cahiers Du Sport that their article was not 100% his source but also stated that he was unsure about how true the story actually was.
Often, when you write a big story, you're desperate for it to come off so you "look good". Not so sure this time thetim.es/10Kes27 (£)

@oliverkaytimes What do you "suspect"?! We made it all up, including the picture... We know nothing about your source, if it exists.

@oliverkaytimes Maybe your "source" has got his "information" from our spoof, and fooled you. We ALL made it up.

@oliverkaytimes Then we have invented something that was about to come true 15 hrs later. We're kind of geniuses. Should sell betting tips.

The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and Daily Mirror also ran with the story based on The Times report.
