Inconceivable though it may have appeared prior to the beginning of this summer's World Cup, David De Gea has found himself the subject of some concern from Spanish fans.
After committing a disappointing error to allow Cristiano Ronaldo net Portugal's second goal in Spain's opening round draw, the Manchester United 'keeper has had relatively little opportunity to redeem himself.
With Spain keeping attacks on their goal to a minimum, De Gea's status as La Roja's #1 had to be reaffirmed by head coach Fernando Hierro in the build up to their round-of-16 clash with Russia.
The source of some interest amid the the Spanish press, Thiago Alcântara - a player who almost ended up playing alongside De Gea at Manchester United during the regrettable David Moyes era - has been quick to alleviate fears that any fans have regarding the 'keeper's ability. Speaking to Marca, the Bayern Munich man was unwavering in his support:
It is the most unfortunate position on the field that David plays in and if you haven't seen him in United or national team games, you should check him out. Do some self-criticism as well and assess what a great goalkeeper he is.
He's the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, he works like a fucking animal and our confidence in David is huge but we have three great 'keepers.
Encouraging fans not to "live with a fear of failing," the former Barcelona man encouraged Spain "to go out and play with speed and have possession of the ball."
Demonstrating a refreshing view of Spain's approach to the knockout rounds, Thiago believes there should be no fear; "We don't look at the draw and worry about whether we are on side A or side B, all that matters is playing well. We are now going to play against thousands of Russians in a full stadium and it will seem like we are a long way from home."
Confident that they will be 'professional' enough to carry out the task about them, De Gea is sure to be grateful for Thiago's words.
