They’re Back – FIFA Have Lifted Nigeria’s International Football Ban

Managers all across Europe will have cursed FIFA’s decision to overturn Nigeria’s suspension from international football after the country’s football federation boss was reinstated after being replaced by a senior civil servant.

After the Super Eagles’ first round exit from the World Cup, the Nigerian government issued its sports ministry with a legal order to appoint new federation leaders. Under FIFA rules, national governing bodies are protected from influence by third parties, including politicians.

The ban was handed down by FIFA’s emergency committee and was in place until it could be proved that the Nigeria Football Federation could conduct its affairs without government interference.

FIFA said on Friday that court proceedings and an order preventing the NFF from operating had been withdrawn.

FIFA said in a statement that as the “legitimate bodies (have been) reinstalled, FIFA has decided to lift the suspension.”

What may have resulted in a lack of Africa Cup of Nations activity for the Super Eagles would have been great news for Premier League managers in particular, as they would have been able to keep their Nigerian players in England during that difficult January period.
