Some might say it has been coming but the holy trinity of Irish sports broadcasting is about to become a rare sight. The front page splash on the Irish Daily Star this morning gives us the all important headline, RTÉ AXE GILES.
Yes it seems John Giles tenure on the front bench of RTÉ's football pundits may be at an end after a spokesperson for the state broadcaster confirmed that Giles would not take his place alongside Eamon Dunphy and Liam Brady. Instead, Richie Sadlier will be in the hotseat.
The same spokesperson denied that the move was something permanent, instead suggesting that it was simply down to a 'scheduling' issue. However, the Star are quoting an unnamed source who has said that not only is Giles available on Saturday, the shock substitution is not going down well with Dunphy and Brady.
RTÉ have said that it is an 'editorial decision based around scheduling' but it does seem significant that Giles has been pushed to the sidelines for what is sure to be Ireland's biggest game of the year.
So the big question remains, is it the right decision? We'll leave it up to you.
