Via the Twitlonger platform, the Wolfe Tones have weighed in with a statement criticising Unionist MPs who criticise professional footballers who tweet about liking the Wolfe Tones.

It is ironic that in 2013, Unionist politicians try to chastise those who listen to Irish ballads. Gregory Campbell is welcome to attend any Wolfe Tones show for a lesson in history. The songs are a reflection of history, not the cause of it. To find the cause, some politicians need to look closer to home. Let The People Sing!

I'm not sure that's the strictest definition of irony, but we take their point. Also, the Wolfe Tones were on Twitter? Who knew?
