Sunderland fans have set up a donation page as a mark of respect for the two die-hard Newcastle supporters who were lost on Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday.

John Alder, who was in his 60s, and Liam Sweeney, 28 were travelling to New Zealand for the Magpies’ preseason tour. The two were known to have attended virtually all matches involving Newcastle United, including reserve and academy games.

Alder (above) was very well known in the city and was believed to have attended every Newcastle game since 1973.

The fund was set up on the GoFundMe site after a suggestion on the ReadyToGo Sunderland  fans’ forum.

At the time of writing, the Mackems have raised a very admirable £6,110 “and rising”, which will be used “for a floral tribute and money to charities (or the families).”

You can get involved in this very worthy cause here.
