It's tight at the top of the Championship.

Going into last night's game between Birmingham and Middlesbrough, three teams were tied on 87 points with two games remaining. Those teams - Middlesbrough, Burnley and Brighton - are also incredibly close in terms of goal difference.

On Friday night, Middlesbrough's hopes of a return to the Premier League took a blow when they drew 2-2.

After going behind to a great strike from Ireland international Stephen Gleeson, Boro scored twice to take the lead.

Then, in the 68th minute, David Davis pegged back Boro. The anguish on Aitor Karanka's face was obvious.

Almost immediately - just a minute after Davis' goal - it looked as though Middlesbrough had retaken the lead. Daniel Ayala certainly thought so as he celebrated the strike which nestled in the bottom right hand corner of the Birmingham net.

Their elation was short-lived as the assistant referee - wrongly - disallowed the goal. Ayala was onside when Jordan Rhodes played the ball to him.

In commentary, it was described as a 'shocking decision' from the linesman and one which could now cost Middlesbrough automatic promotion to the Premier League.

This is how the table stands going into the final games of the season.

Earlier in the game, Jordan Rhodes had equalised to make it 1-1.

It came via a terrible mistake from Birmingham goalkeeper Adam Legzdins. Perhaps, Boro had used up there quota of luck for the game with Rhodes' goal.
