The outside world can often seem oblivious to the fact that Ireland has a domestic league, a blind spot that they share with many Irish people.
A certain former Irish manager of Italian birth told his compatriots in a matter of factly fashion that Ireland had 'no League'.
But Dundalk trended worldwide this evening after their stunning 3-0 win over BATE Borisov took them to within one two-legged tie of the Champions League group phase (and their potential opponents do not look all that intimidating).
You can relax here: This is not a rerun of the great British Twitter Reaction craze of 2014.
Naturally, the foreign press all covered Dundalk's victory, with the UK press remaining faithful to the canard that Man City are their possible opponents in the next round. Though the Guardian have amended that later on.
The only foreign football banter merchant to congratulate Dundalk was grizzled old schooler Rodney Marsh who heard 'Dundalk' and immediately thought of Mr. Tommy Smyth.

Ian Darke, a well traveled and cosmopolitan English commentator, sat up and took notice.
Irish champions Dundalk thrash Bate Borisov and are only a play off win away from getting into the Champions League proper. Good story.

The Scots remember Stephen Kenny from his time at Dunfermline. The Daily Record referred to him as the 'former Dunfermline boss' in their report.
We should also add that many Celtic supporters are hoping that they get Dundalk in the next round.
Some result for Dundalk, shame Kenny had such a bad time at Dunfermline. Not helped by a group of back stabbing lazy players.

If we make through tomorrow, please say we can get Dundalk ( no offence)? ?

Saw #Dundalk trending and thought it was about #TheCorrs. Disappointed. But congratulations anyway!

Amazing Dundalk!!! No longer just a place that could also be a fictional regional detective

If Celtic loose tomorrow then Scottish football will have hit a new all time low as Dundalk from Ireland will go further than Celtic...

The facebook operators for Match of the Day issued their congratulations. While most of the commenters are Irish people putting the result into context for our English cousins, there is the odd non-Irish contributor.
