Left-back has long been a trouble position for Ireland.
For Euro 2016, going by the qualifiers and recent friendlies, Martin O'Neill's options are going to be Stephen Ward or an out-of-position Robbie Brady.
The second half of this season has seen a renaissance for Ward's career. After previously struggling to get a game, the 30-year-old established himself as first choice for Championship winners Burnley.
Still, Ward is a solid but uninspiring option. Brady is exciting going forward but is often a liability defensively. Plus, you can't help but feel he's just better being deployed further forward on the left of midfield.
Other, younger options are available for Martin O'Neill - though he is unlikely to use them this summer.
If O'Neill remains as Ireland manager two players he could experiment with are Matt Doherty and Greg Cunningham, both recently won Player of the Season awards for their clubs. Also, both were named in O'Neill's 40-man squad for the friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia back in March.
Doherty, from Dublin, would normally have been considered a right-back. Like Ward he had a superb second half of the season, being used as an emergency left-back.
He revelled in the position, doing enough to be named Wolves Players' Player of the Season and Fans' Player of the Season.

The 24-year-old also scored the club's Goal of the Season.

Doherty was not the only Irish full-back to being named a Championship club's Player of the Season.
Cunningham was named Preston's Supporters' Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season.
The 25-year-old from Galway was pretty much ever-present for Preston as they finished 11th in the Championship.
