FIFA's statement of a couple of hours ago asserting that the post-Henry business payment was in fact 'a loan for the construction of a new stadium in Ireland' has provoked a response from the FAI.
John Delaney had not disclosed that the payment constituted a loan in an interview with Ray D'Arcy today. He also cited a confidentiality agreement as the reason he would not formally say how much the payment was worth.
The FAI have just now released a statement confirming that the payment was indeed a loan which was put into 'the Aviva Stadium project'.
The statement does not include reference to the supposed clause stating that the FAI would have been required to pay back the loan had Ireland qualified for the 2014 World Cup, and insists that the 'settlement was made without any conditions other than confidentiality.'
Here's the whole thing.
